Energy Profile

An Energy Atlas is an inventory of basic information about energy that are necessary to define and implement an Energy Self-sufficiency Strategy. The first basic information about energy is the energy profile.

An energy profile makes an inventory of all primary productions, imports, exports, transformations and consumptions of energy.

It gives a detailed view, per energy and per sector, of the energy situation of an island, region, country over a certain period, typically over a year.

An energy profile has two functions.

  • To provide a clear understanding of the energy situation
By comparing the energy situation with the ideal energy situation, it is possible to draw areas of efforts. This easily leads to the definition of a strategy.
  • To follow changes by comparing to the previous periods
This allows to measure the results of the defined strategy and the implemented actions over the previous periods.

Island-NEWS energy profile methodology

Island-NEWS has developed a common methodology for Energy Profile. It is simple and refers to international conventions set by organisations such as the International Energy Agency.
