July - September 2006

18-19 September 2006 - International symposium in Réunion Island about Natural Hazards
An international symposium about Natural Hazards was organized by the University of Réunion Island and the Regional Council Of Réunion Island. Experts and political representatives from Indian Ocean Islands were present. Presentations and discussions dealt with prevention, emergency help and cooperation. Sabrina RAMASAMY from ARER presented a project introducing clean, efficient and sustainable technologies in post-hazard situations. Franck AL SHAKARCHI attended the symposium and met with representatives from Indian Ocean, especially from Mauritius.

19 September 2006 - Mr Christophe RAT, ARER Director, writes to energy experts involved with the 2005 Energy Meetings.
He announces the new developments with Island-News and re-launches the call for publication.

18 September 2006 - Island-News toolbox is ready
The Technical and Strategic Repository is finalized. The publication database is up-to-date. A new version of the web site is launched.

August 2006 - Meeting with Mr Anfani Msoili from Mwali Island , Comoros.
Mr Anfani Msoili, General secretary for the government of the Autonomous Island of Mwali ( Comoros ) came for the grand opening of Kélonia Tortue Museum . During his trip, Franck AL SHAKARCHI and him met to discuss operational projects as well as trainings for officials.

August 2006 - Meeting with Dr Christian Bouchard from Canada.
Dr Christian Bouchard from Université Laurentienne ( Canada ) came to Réunion Island to discuss partnership on a Research project: Energy and Development in South-western Indian Ocean Islands . His objectives are to establish Energy profiles, to develop and test an energy transition theory as well as to explore relations between energy and development. Island-NEWS and the ARER are proud to partner with Dr Christian Bouchard on his project.

August 2006 - Island-News Project Manager has arrived.
He aims at finalizing the Island-News toolbox (Technical and Strategic Repository, publication database and web site) as well as contacting network members and launching projects.

July 2006 - Island-News Project manager is recruited.
Franck AL SHAKARCHI will soon arrive in Réunion Island to take in charge of the Island-News cooperation network.
He graduated from Ecole Polytechnique (Engineering), Ecole Supérieure d'Electrictité (Electrical Engineering) and Université Paris- Dauphine (Master "sustainable development and organisations"). He worked for an oilfield services company for five years and a construction company for one year.
