About the issue of energy self-sufficiency and climate change mitigation

Numerous global and local interests bind islands and regions around the problems of energy self-sufficiency and adaptation to climate change.

As a matter of fact, global warming weakens societies and ecosystems of all islands and regions around the world.

The tension on fossil energy reserves and the rapid increase of their prices impose a strong pressure on the economy and the standard of living of all islands and regions around the world.

Furthermore, numerous islands and regions are particularly sensitive to these two phenomena because of:

  • Relative isolation
  • Modesty of the population and the economy
  • Population growth and increase in energy consumptions
  • Scarce availability of local fossil resources and energy dependence
  • Disparity of access to knowledge and new technologies

Facing these difficulties, islands sometimes suffer from limited means: reduced financial resources or weak geopolitical weight on the world chessboard.

So, for islands and regions around the world, the pooling of means appears to be a solution to answer their common interests.

Cooperation towards energy self-sufficiency and climate change mitigation can then be undertaken through:

  • Knowledge sharing: methodologies, technologies and data
  • Experience sharing: projects and actions
  • Coaching and support: creation of institutions and capacity building
  • Partnerships: assembly of projects and financial support

Within this framework, two initiatives, devoted to the islands and regions around the world, were born in the Réunion Island , under the patronage of the Regional Council and organized by the Réunion Island Regional Energy Agency :

  • 2005 Energy meetings :
Summer Seminar (26-28 Oct. 2005): Energy Self-sufficiency Strategies for our Islands and Regions 2000-2025-2050
International Symposium (3-4 Nov. 2005): A European Energy Policy for Islands and Regions 2000-2025-2050
