2005 Energy Meetings

In 2005, Energy meetings were held in Réunion Island , under the patronage of the Regional Council.

These meetings were organized by the ARER and divided into two sessions:

  • Summer Seminar (26-28 Oct. 2005): Energy Self-sufficiency Strategies for our Islands and Regions 2000-2025-2050
  • International Symposium (3-4 Nov. 2005): A European Energy Policy for Islands and Regions 2000-2025-2050

The Summer Seminar brought together international experts, representing 15 islands from 10 countries.

Five workshops were then organized. These workshops provided the material for the Strategic and Technical Repository and allowed the foundation of the inter-island co-operation. For that matter, a call for publication was issued on the 26 th of April 2005 to fuel the five key themes of the seminar.

Afterwards, all publications were compiled in a shared knowledge database : this is one shared tool for inter-island cooperation.

The International Symposium was open to a broader public of energy actors from Islands and Regions: politic representatives, public administrations, energy operators, education and training managers as well as researchers.

The Symposium allowed to synthesise and to share the work done during the summer seminar. In addition, new testimonies and presentations were delivered by the broader panel of energy actors. Energy policies in Islands and Regions were then analyzed from a global point of view.

The discussions and conclusions of the 2005 Energy Meetings were gathered in the Strategic and Technical Repository, synthesis of the 2005 Energy Meetings proceedings english version / french version ( 1,6 Mo / 2,2 Mo).

The final recommendations from the 2005 Energy Meetings emphasized the necessity to initiate a cooperation network. The main cooperation themes drawn at that time were leading to the creation of a formal framework. That is what the Réunion Island Regional Agency for Energy is striving to do: it included the inter-island cooperation network as an action theme in its 2006 programme. The following objectives were set:

  • Development of a shared knowledge database
  • Development of a network and the perpetuation of the existing bonds between its various actors. This objective also refers to the publication of the Strategic and Technical Repository
  • Development of partnership and cooperation through Energy atlas (profiles, prospects, local resources, training and employment, financing means)
  • Promotion of all the achievements of the network among National and International Organisations (IPCC, ONERC, WCRE, European Union, UNO, AFD.)

Beyond the previous objectives, Island-News aims at building the local capacity of all islands and regions around the world, by all means notably:

  • Information, education and training about energy and climate change
  • Advice and support to organisation of projects related to energy management and renewable energy sources
  • Support to energy self-sufficiency strategies
  • Creation of local agencies and observatories about energy and climate change
