About Island-NEWS

Island-NEWS is an inter-islands cooperation initiative launched by ARER Association (Reunion Island Regional Energy Agency), a non-profit-making association.

Read the message from Mister Paul Vergès, President of the Regional Council of Réunion, President of the Réunion Island Regional Energy Agency (ARER) and President of the National Observatory on the Effects of Global Warming (ONERC).

Island-NEWS aims at promoting and developing actions and strategies for energy self-sufficiency as an answer for adaptation and mitigation of climate change. It proposes to its partners to cooperate on many sectors :

  • Knowledge and experience sharing
  • Creation and update of the Island Energy Atlas
  • Information, education and training about energy and climate change
  • Advice and support to organization of projects related to energy management and renewable energy sources
  • Support to energy self-sufficiency strategies
  • Creation of Agencies and Observatories about energy and climate change
  • Search for international financing sources

Island-NEWS gathers numerous islands and Regions around the world, via public officials, energy experts, academics and researchers. The network tries to use the expertise of territories in advance on energy issues to support developing territories. Reunion Island and the Indian Ocean islands are at the core of Island-NEWS.

Island-NEWS team

Thanks to the financial support from the Reunion Island Regional Council, a team with technical and organisational capacities was set up to lead the network :

  • Laurent GAUTRET, Island-News Project Director, also ARER Technical Director
  • Franck AL SHAKARCHI, Island-News Project Manager
  • Charles GERMANEAU, Island-News Toolbox Developer

The team is associated with the Reunion Island Regional Energy Agency (ARER) and benefits from its capacities. ARER is a non-profit-making association as defined by the French Associations Act 1901. ARER gathers the main Energy Actors in Reunion Island and also pursues international activities in Indian Ocean. Its main missions are:

  • Information, education and training
  • Advice to project holders
  • Development of technological sectors related to energy
  • Management of the Reunion Island Energy Observatory
  • Management of an R&D platform
